Certain plastic yogurt containers seem to have a tendency to escape recycling conveyor belts and become flotsam on our Oceans. Some, among them, would have incredible stories to tell, having travelled for decades, on Earths oceans!<\/strong><\/p>\n

These plastic containers will end, in the best of fortunes, in a recycling line, or, in the worst, as floatsam in the Earth’s oceans.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Floating plastic debris is, then,\u00a0 ingested by fish, sea turtles, aquatic birds and marine mammals, which mistake it for food, causing the demise of millions of wild animals.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, under the effect of sunlight, floating plastic debris disintegrates in ever smaller particles, called microplastic, which end up being ingested by aquatic microorganisms, which feed on phytoplancton, thus entering our food chain, reaching our plate and our intestines.<\/p>\n

A truly natural yogurt maker<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>Extracted from the cork oak tree, every 9 years or so, without hurting the tree or its longevity, cork is the YogurtNest’s \u201cmagic ingredient\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the cork oak,\u00a0Quercus suber<\/strong>,<\/em> may be found from Portugal to Siberia\u2019s Far East, high quality cork may only be harvested over here and in the Mediterranean Basin, having been used by Man, along millennia, to create a never-ending assortment of tools and implements.<\/p>\n

Another particularity about the cork oak tree is its capacity to adapt to and thrive in poor soils and dry climates, creating lush ecosystems, providing food and shelter to a large variety of wildlife species.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent scientific studies indicate that, for each ton of cork that is harvested, 73 tons of CO2 are absorbed from the atmosphere by the montado ecosystem. This way, each YogurtNest represents about 110 Kg of carbon that were withdrawn from the Planet’s atmosphere.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the past, dense cork oak forests covered large expanses of the Iberian Peninsula.<\/strong> Sadly, though, very little remains, from this once never-ending forest. You can, though, still find large areas occupied by another ecosystem where the cork oak reigns supreme: the Montado<\/strong>, known, in neighbouring Spain, as Dehesa.<\/p>\n

It may come out as a surprise for many, that the Montado, one of the richest ecosystems in Europe – actually, one of Earth’s Biodiversity Hotspots, is a creation of the Human ingenuity.<\/strong> This agroforestry system has sustained itself for hundreds of years.<\/p>\n

Sadly, though, even the Montado has lost large chunks of its original area, in recent decades, to accommodate cereal cultures, eucaliptus plantations and, more recently, real estate developments.<\/p>\n

Many are the species that have been affected by the decline of these two ecosystems, in the Iberian Peninsula, but none as the Iberian lynx Lynx <\/em>pardinus, the most threatened large cat species on Earth, that only survives thanks to the work of devoted biologists and a captive breeding program by Portugal and Spain.<\/p>\n

O iogurte \u00e9 um alimento fant\u00e1stico! \u00c9 nutritivo, \u00e9 delicioso e extremamente conveniente. Por estas raz\u00f5es, tornou-se um dos alimentos mais populares no Planeta onde, diariamente, se produzem milh\u00f5es de embalagens de iogurte, a esmagadora maioria, das quais, de pl\u00e1stico, derivado do petr\u00f3leo. Estas embalagens viajam centenas de quil\u00f3metros e s\u00e3o armazenados em c\u00e2maras de refrigera\u00e7\u00e3o, implicando a liberta\u00e7\u00e3o de toneladas de CO2 e o consumo de Gigawatts de energia que poderia, de outra forma, ser usada para outros fins.<\/p>

Objectos pl\u00e1sticos que flutuam pelos nossos Oceanos s\u00e3o ingeridos por peixes, tartarugas, aves e mam\u00edferos marinhos, que os confundem com alimento, causando a morte a milhares de animais selvagens.<\/p>

Para complicar o problema, por efeito da luz solar, o pl\u00e1stico flutuante desintegra-se em part\u00edculas, cada vez menores, os micropl\u00e1sticos, que acabam por ser ingeridas por microorganismos aqu\u00e1ticos que se alimentam de fitopl\u00e2ncton, entrando assim na cadeia alimentar, e chegando ao nosso prato e aos nossos organismos.<\/p>

Extra\u00edda do sobreiro, a cada 9 anos, mais ou menos, sem que a \u00e1rvore, ou a sua longevidade, sofram com isso, \u00e9 a corti\u00e7a que confere ao YogurtNest a sua \u201cmagia\u201d.<\/p>

O sobreiro (Quercus suber<\/em>) pode ser encontrado desde Portugal at\u00e9 ao Extremo Oriente, mas apenas por c\u00e1 e pelos pa\u00edses mediterr\u00e2nicos se consegue extrair corti\u00e7a, de qualidade, que tem vindo a ser usada, pelo Homem, ao longo de milhares de anos, para a cria\u00e7\u00e3o de uma infind\u00e1vel variedade de ferramentas.<\/p>

Outra particularidade do sobreiro \u00e9 a sua capacidade para se adaptar a solos muito pobres e climas secos, criando, neles, ecossistema extremamente ricos, proporcionado abrigo e alimento a uma grande variedade de seres vivos.<\/p>

Pode ser uma surpresa, para alguns, mas o Montado, apesar de ser um dos mais ricos ecossistemas da Europa, \u00e9 uma cria\u00e7\u00e3o do engenho humano. Este ecossistema agroflorestal tem-se auto-sustentado ao longo de centenas de anos.<\/p>

Infelizmente, tamb\u00e9m o Montado perdeu grande parte da sua \u00e1rea original, em d\u00e9cadas recentes, para dar lugar a culturas de cereais, planta\u00e7\u00f5es de eucaliptos e, mais recentemente, investimentos imobili\u00e1rios.<\/p>

Muita s\u00e3o as esp\u00e9cies afectadas pelo decl\u00ednio destes dois ecossistemas, na Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica, mas nenhuma o foi como o lince-ib\u00e9rico (Lynx pardinus<\/em>), uma esp\u00e9cie amea\u00e7ada de extin\u00e7\u00e3o, que apenas sobrevive gra\u00e7as ao programa de reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o em cativeiro, fruto de uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o entre Espanha e Portugal.<\/p>
